UPC vs EAN: what is the difference
UPC is mostly used in North America and EAN worldwide. Add a leading zero to a UPC-A and you get an EAN-13, so both coexist happily in one database.
Make sure your database field fits 13 characters, otherwise a 12-digit code may be truncated.
